BEANS (Better Eating, Activity, and Nutrition for Students)

We partnered with North Coast Opportunities in this county wide program to hire 6 teens in Fort Bragg to be peer nutrition educators. They visit hundreds of kids each year in the Kudos for Kids afterschool programs in 3 schools where they teach kids from grades k-8 about nutrition and the importance of physical activity while making healthy food together. In the summer we will be at the Farmers' Market all of July giving healthy food demos. They do a great job educating their peers about healthy eating while making it fun! Tara Barnes and Carrie Gerard are the BEANS coordinators.

The Learning Garden is an on-site Farm to School Program and center for education in community-based agriculture and nutrition at Fort Bragg High School on the Mendocino Coast of California. Organic food is grown by students, volunteers, and staff, sold to the FBUSD Food Service Program, and served in the high school cafeteria.  The garden is led by Matthew Tarnoff, Learning Garden Manager. For more information, write to noyofoodforest@gmail.com.

The Noyo Come-Unity Garden at Thanksgiving Coffee is a traditional community garden where individuals and families rent plots to grow their own fresh produce.  It is located in the south harbor of Fort Bragg adjacent to the world famous Thanksgiving Coffee roasting headquarters.  The Garden hosts nine individual plots and a large communal garden space where food is grown and donated to local shelters and food banks.  This garden is led by Noyo Food Forest Community Gardens Coordinator Sienna MacFarland.  Community workdays are held every Sunday from 1-4pm.  For more information call 357-3430.

The Head Start Family Garden Project is a collaborative initiative of North Coast Opportunities’ Community Gardens Project, the Head Start Child Development Program, and the Noyo Food Forest.  The purpose of the garden is to create opportunities for Head Start students to gain hands-on, garden based learning experiences and for their families to grow their own garden produce.

The Head Start classes meet in the garden weekly and participate in garden activities while they learn and explore. Produce from the garden is served to the students for their snacks and lunches. The children experience their food from seed to plate.

Garden Days at the Head Start Garden are every Thursday 1-3pm. Head Start families and community volunteers of all ages are welcome to come lend a hand and go home with fresh produce. For more info write kim@noyofoodforest.org.

The Grey Whale Garden

In partnership with Mike, the Grey Whale Garden is now in full bloom and has become a lovely attraction in Fort Bragg!  The garden is a haven for butterflies, bees, and other important pollinators that we hold so dear.  A food forest is now under development and plans for a hoop house are in the works.  Thank you, Mike, for offering us this opportunity to share the beauty of organic gardening with the thousands of passers-by on the famous Highway 1!

The Senior Kitchen Garden is a partnership project of the Noyo Food Forest and the Redwood Coast Senior Center. The garden grows fresh organic veggies for the Senior Center lunch program.  Volunteer gardening sessions happen Thursdays from 10-11:30. For information contact the garden coordinator Filis Rose at 964-6913

Farmers Without Borders: Partnership Project with OTEPIC

Noyo Food Forest is linked with OTEPIC in Kitale, Kenya to sprout new seeds of hope through community-based organic agriculture. Members of the Noyo Food Forest have helped collect donations to support the development of a sister Learning Garden in rural Kitale, Kenya by OTEPIC (Organic Technology Extension and Promotion of Initiative Centre).  The land was purchased in February of 2009 and The Learning Garden in Kitale, Kenya is now under cultivation!  Philip and his fellow farmers are now growing nutritious food for the community of Kitale!  Its amazing what we can do in solidarity with one another.
